It may not have immediately restored United to the role of Premiership title contenders, but the 2-0 win over league leaders Arsenal could not have been celebrated more raucously had United just claimed their 16th championship.
Goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy (penalty) and Wayne Rooney, on his 19th birthday, not only kept United within sight of the runaway Gunners, but also brought to an end Arsenal’s 49-match unbeaten run in the Premiership. (AHAKS!)
Great way to celebrate the birthday boy huh!
Arsenal fought long and hard - in a match that was niggly but nowhere near as nasty as last season’s well documented clash - to hang on to their proud record. And whilst they may have edged it in terms of possession it was United who scored the vital goals.
It was a game United dare not lose for defeat would have seen them slip to an almost unassailable fourteen points gap behind their great rivals.
Alan Smith and Louis Saha had replaced Cristiano Ronaldo and van Nistelrooy respectively, and both players were involved in the move which paved the way for Rooney to score the second killer goal.
The game had already spilled over into added time when Saha sent the ball to Smith wide on the right. The former Leeds man had already decided where his pass was going and he executed it perfectly to leave Rooney with the comparatively simple task of tapping into the virtually unguarded net
